Flat and bent laminated glass can be found in a variety of architectural settings, including railing systems for balconies and decks. Glass affords visibility and preserves views of the surrounding area. Laminated glass offers the additional feature of glass retention after breakage.
Photos from a recent glass railing installation were shared by Deck Craft Plus, a deck building company in Honey Brook, PA. In this project, two plies of ¼” low iron glass were laminated and installed in the railing system. A SentryGlas® ionoplast interlayer was used to bond the glass. This interlayer offers 5x the tear strength and 100x the stiffness of a traditional PVB interlayer. There are no plasticizers in the interlayer, and thus, it is much less sensitive to moisture intrusion.
