Elevator companies specify glazing for hoistway enclosures and hoistway doors according to requirements found the the International Building Code. The 2024 IBC (Chapter 24, Sections 2409 and 2409.2) requires glazing to be laminated glass, complying with the Consumer Product Safety Commission standard 16CFR Part 1201.
Laminated glass may be flat or curved, depending on the design of the elevator enclosure. Laminations may be made with two or more plies of annealed or strengthened glass, depending on the size, support system, and location of the elevator glazing. Laminates may be clear or tinted. In the event of glass breakage, the glass will remain intact to ensure passenger safety until replacement can be made.
Glass elevators offer passengers spectacular views of both the outside and interior of buildings. In addition, the glazing can enhance daylighting and a feeling of openness for passengers.
